Holiday 2010 Attacks?

CBS news is reporting Iraqi authorities have obtained confessions from captured insurgents who claim al Qaeda is planning suicide attacks in the United States and Europe during the Christmas season, according to two senior officials.


There was no way to verify the insurgents’ claims. But Western counterterrorism officials generally are on high alert during the holiday season, especially since last year’s failed attack by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the so-called underwear bomber, who tried to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day.

    I can’t help but wonder, while reading the article:

    #1 Do they even know which country is being targeted and this is why nothing is being said? It is much easier just to put both countries on higher alert status.

    or #2 If the West is being targeted and they know it, don’t the citizens have a right to know? Or is there a concern of retaliation from the American citizens if they were alerted beforehand?

      The first question will depend on the depth of the chatter. But I would think the authorities would have a very good idea. The answer to the second and third questions is yes and probably yes.
